April 29: Celebrate National Poetry Month with the Ancient City Poets

Poet Plant
by Chris Bodor

Poem in my pocket
Sonnet in my sock
Hymn in my heart
Song in my soul.

Poem in my pocket
Do not read between the lines
Lay down your weapons
Open up your minds.

Poetic words are flowers
Vulgar words are weeds
Pull a poem from your pocket
Give the Earth what it needs
Plant poem seeds.

April is National Poetry month and poetry is alive in the Nation’s Oldest City. The attached short video is the proof:

On Thursday, April 26, join tens of thousands across the country, and in Canada, in celebrating this special occasion by carrying a poem with you and sharing it with others, and on social media with #pocketpoem.

The Ancient City Poets will host a community open mic reading from 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29 at Corazon Cinema and Cafe, 36 Granada Street, Saint Augustine, across from the Lightner Museum. Saint Augustine Speaks is an open mic series that offers poets of all skill levels an opportunity to share their poems with a loving and supportive audience.

Let’s take Tallahassee poet David Kirby up on his invite to copy the following format. Here is David’s idea: “To many, poetry is angst-ridden (which much of it is) or impenetrable (which it shouldn’t be). Yet there has always been a deep strain of celebration in poetry: indeed, more poetry celebrates than it denigrates, castigates, ruminates. The democratic spirit will hover over this open mic as each of us reads a poem that celebrates.”

A sign-up sheet will be provided, and readers will be called to the podium in the order their names appear on the list. The mic will be turned off at 4:30 to allow the last 30 minutes for a meet and greet and networking. The Ancient City Poets have been holding poetry open mic readings on the last Sunday of the month since August 2009. All are welcome. Come as you are.
