The Council on Aging has received a $52,000 check from the Wal-Mart Foundation. Robert Midgett, CTL, export transportation operations manager for Wal-Mart, made the presentation May 17 to Becky Yanni , COA executive director. Also present were Ruthie Shakar, manager of COA food services; and Joseph Boles Jr., president of the COA board of directors.

“Wal-Mart really stepped up to the plate to help us fight hunger and poor nutrition and enhance the quality of life for the St. Johns County elder community,” Yanni told Midgett. She noted that the COA serves more than 400 freshly prepared meals daily, and about 265 of those go to homebound elders through Meals on Wheels. “The kitchen equipment we have been using to provide these meals is at least 14 to 20 years old.”

Midgett said that when the COA requested funds, Wal-Mart recognized a real community need. “We feel that it’s important to give back to the community through our charitable giving arm, the Wal-Mart Foundation.”
