Feb. 26: Ceremony will recognize St. Augustine founder’s birthday

The public is invited to attend a brief wreath laying ceremony to recognize the 497th anniversary of the birth of Pedro Menendez de Avilés, founder of the City of St. Augustine.

The ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26 at the Menendez statue in front of City Hall, 75 King Street.

Menendez, whose birthday is actually on Feb. 15, was born in Avilés, Spain, and founded the city on September 8, 1565.

In addition to the laying of a wreath, the ceremony includes a reading of a proclamation by Mayor Nancy Shaver and participation by the Men of Menendez, a reenactor organization that depicts the military accompaniment of those who first landed and founded the city.
