June 15-24: St. Augustine Music Festival features classical concerts in the Cathedral

June 15-17 and June 22-24: The nationally recognized St. Augustine Music Festival returns in June with a stage full of celebrated guest artists for its 11th season of free classical concerts in the Cathedral Basilica, 38 Cathedral Place, downtown St. Augustine.

All six concerts start at 7:30 p.m., playing out over two weekends, June 15-17 and June 22-24

A highlight this year is a duo piano performance June 17 by legendary American pianist Leon Fleisher and his wife, Katherine Jacobson. Fleisher made international headlines when his brilliant concert career was curtailed by a neurological condition that disabled his right hand. He reinvented his musicianship to become the world’s leading presenter of piano repertoire for the left hand alone, and established a second career as a conductor. After years of medical therapies, the pianistic use of his right hand was restored, and his keyboard “comeback” included a 2007 Kennedy Center Honors award, a Grammy-nominated CD and an Oscar-nominated documentary.

Admission is FREE. The popularity of the series, however, means seating is limited and some concerts may require a (free) seating pass. Go to www.StAugustineMusicFestival.org for details.

THE PLAYERS Championship is sponsoring the St. Augustine Music Festival’s opening night concert. The June 15 concert will feature violinist Nigel Armstrong and a program of Bach, Stravinsky, Grieg and Elgar. Donations at every level are welcome to keep this world-class music playing for our community, open to all with no admission charges.
