From the United States Lifesaving Association
The United States Lifesaving Association is America’s nonprofit professional association of beach lifeguards and open water rescuers. The USLA works to reduce the incidence of death and injury in the aquatic environment through public education, national lifeguard standards, training programs, promotion of high levels of lifeguard readiness, and other means.
The mission of the St. Johns County Chapter of the Southeast Region of the USLA (known as St. Augustine Lifesaving Association) is to assist the county lifeguard service decrease the number of water related injuries and fatalities; to increase the number of successful water rescues and to accomplish both with increased safety to county personnel.
The SALA and USLA ore non profit organizations whose goals are to reduce the incidence of death and injury in the aquatic environment through public education and high levels of lifeguard training.Â
Josh Romaine, Junior Lifeguard Coordinator for St. Johns County brought a team of 7 competitors to the United States Lifesaving Association’s Nationals Competition in Daytona Beach on August 5, 2015.The children and teens competed at the national level against other top junior lifeguard agencies from around the country in their respective age groups.

Professional Lifeguard National Competion
On Thursday, Aug. 6, 20165, the professional divisions (those who or who have worked as an ocean lifeguard) started a 3-day competition between the top professional lifeguard agencies in the country. Eleven members of the St. Augustine Lifesaving Association (SALA) represented St. Johns County Marine Rescue. Team SALA, in addition to normal lifeguard training for work, has held 3 practices a week for the past 4 months in preparing for regional and national competition. On July 16-17, the St. Johns County competed in Flagler Beach at the USLA Southeast Region Surf Lifesaving Championship and finished with a 3rd place. Team Coach Lg Josh Ashley, Asst.
