March 28: More than 200 on stage in James and the Giant Peach Jr.

SJCCA at Murray Middle chorus, drama, dance, and art department collaborate for musical at St. Augustine Amphitheatre

St. Augustine, FL — A ladybug. A grasshopper. A spider. An earthworm. A giant peach. And a boy named James. More than 200 arts students from the St. Johns County Center for the Arts at Murray Middle School will present James & The Giant Peach, Jr. at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 28 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, 1340 A1A South, St. Augustine. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students and can be purchased at the gate, or online at www.showtix4u.com (search: Murray Players).

This delightfully offbeat adaptation of the classic Roald Dahl adventure tells the story of a boy and his insect friends taking an amazing journey across the ocean. The production is directed by JoAnn Kirby-Nance, licensed by Music Theatre International, and sponsored by The Friends of the St. Augustine Amphitheatre.

Along with The Murray Players (drama students), the vocal ensemble of more than 150 chorus students will sing all the songs in this musical, and the dance ensemble of advanced dance students will perform in the choreographed dance numbers.

Broadway guest star Evan Gray plays James. Evan just returned in January as Bruce in Matilda the Musical on Broadway in New York City, and also was on the Matilda National Tour and was a cast member of the A Christmas Story The Musical, also a Broadway tour.

Based on one of Roald Dahl’s most poignantly quirky stories, James and the Giant Peach Jr. is a brand new take on this “masterpeach” of a tale. Featuring a wickedly tuneful score and a witty and charming book, this adventurous musical about courage and self-discovery is destined to be a classic.

When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion that grows a tremendous peach, rolls into the ocean, and launches a journey of enormous proportions. James befriends a collection of singing insects that ride the giant piece of fruit across the ocean, facing hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements along the way.
