Wear your favorite hat to this Kentucky-Derby themed lunch event

Fluff up your finest Derby Hat and celebrate the Kentucky Derby with Hopefull Handbags at the Raintree Restaurant in uptown St. Augustine. Lady’s Day at the Raintree will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2021. Tickets are $75 per person and will benefit Hopefull Handbags — bringing hope, help and support to survivors of domestic abuse. Tickets are available at hopefullhandbags.org/event-details/ladys-day-at-the-raintree-restaurant

The charity luncheon will include bottomless champagne, baked salmon in lobster champagne cream sauce, classic brownie bites. Mint Juleps will be available upon request — a Kentucky Derby tradition. The event will feature a best hat contest, with first prize going to the person who wears their most imaginative millinery in the “Best Hat Stakes.”

Area businesses have donated silent auction items and prizes for drawings throughout the event. Modeling agencies and boutiques are putting on a fashion show and will have apparel and jewelry for sale. Attendees are asked to bring donations of journals, scarves and gently used handbags for an arms-length of tickets for the prize drawings.

“We hope this fun Kentucky Derby-themed event will bring area businesses and community members together to raise awareness about the issue of domestic abuse and provide hope and support to survivors,” said Cathlene Miner, Author, Self-perception Mentor and Founder of Hopefull Handbags. “We believe in a world without domestic abuse and invite you to join us in creating that world. Together we are stronger.”

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence found that on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. In one year, this equates to more than 10 million people a year!

Tickets are $75 per person. Table sales and sponsorships are also available by contacting Brenda Swann at 904-599-8663. Purchase individual tickets online at www.hopefullhandbags.org/hhevents

Hopefull Handbags began its work by coordinating community donations of once-loved, beautiful handbags and filling them with necessities and delivering them to domestic violence survivors residing in abuse shelters or participating in other service programs.

This work has grown to include supporting “Popup Shelters” in hotels and other temporary housing for when shelters fill up, creating Safe Spots at drop off locations, providing survivors with information on resources, and partnering with area businesses and service providers to ensure overall care. This effort began in St. Johns County (Florida) and has since grown to include Duval, Clay, and Putnam Counties as well as globally.

Since 2017, Hopefull Handbags has distributed more than 3,000 handbags to survivors in northeast Florida, grown to include five affiliates on four continents, provided “popup shelters” for survivors when shelters are full, and provided numerous self-perception workshops to improve self-esteem and confidence of survivors and other holistic approach workshops, and as a preventative step, these workshops are also offered to teens.
