May 27: The Mother of all Poetry Readings with Ancient City Poets

Mother’s Day happens during the month of May and all are invited to write poems and share words that relate to those who have given us life. If you expand the scope and look to music for inspiration, the possibilities are endless: Mothers of Invention, Atomic Mother Heart, and Mother Love Bone. If you expand further, you find words like motherboard, mothership, and motherload. Turn your creative juices loose and share poems with mother as the muse.

The Ancient City Poets will host a community open mic reading on Sunday, May 27th from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Corazon Cinema and Cafe (36 Granada Street, Saint Augustine, across from the Lightner Museum). Saint Augustine Speaks is an open mic series that offers poets of all skill levels an opportunity to share their poems with a loving and supportive audience.

A sign-up sheet will be provided and readers will be called to the podium in the order their names appear on the list. The mic will be turned off at 4:30 to allow the last 30 minutes for a meet and greet and networking. The Ancient City Poets have been holding poetry open mic readings on the last Sunday of the month since August 2009. All are welcome. Come as you are.

Mother’s Day: a Haiku Quintet
by Michael Henry Lee
every Mother’s Day
standing up straight
the entire time
same as last year-
a “hey mom we love you”
on the answering machine
late in the day
her edible arrangement
remains untouched
after her passing
something inside us
can’t let go
tattoo garden
the blush returns
to mother’s rose
