May 31: FREE meal kits available at the City of St. Augustine Parking Garage

In response to food insecurity created by COVID-19, Michael’s of St. Augustine, Five Star Gourmet Foods, True Floridian Clothing Co., A Chefs Adventure, Chefs Collaborative, United Way of St. Johns and the City of St. Augustine are working together to distribute 1,300 fresh produce meal kits. The kits are prepackaged and provided through CARES Act grant funding to assist in harvesting produce, from farmers nationwide, that would otherwise be wasted, disposed of, or left to rot in fields due to decreased demand – another result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The generosity and resiliency of the restaurant community continues to amaze me,” said Bev Slough, Board Chair of United Way of St. Johns. “This industry, although greatly impacted by COVID, is creatively partnering with our City and United Way. Together, we can support those that are food insecure. I am honored to be there Sunday lending a hand during this important event.”

On Sunday, May 31, from 1:00 – 4:00 PM at the City of St. Augustine Parking Garage, meal kits will be distributed one per family-of-four while supplies last. At the drive-thru style event, volunteers will keep cars moving by loading up to 20 cars simultaneously while in the garage loop. Because of traffic constraints, NO EARLY ARRIVAL CAN BE ACCOMMODATED. Those trying to line up or park early will be turned away.

The parking garage drive-thru transportation loop is accessed from the entrance at 10 S. Castillo Drive, adjacent to the Visitor Information Center and the garage. Meal kits come boxed and include an Apple Cider Balsamic Broccoli Sauté, Vegetable Stir Fry Kit, Caesar Salad, Honey Dijon Spinach Salad, Coleslaw Salad and Crisp Apple Slices.

Based on the success of this event and continued need in the community, additional drive-thru distributions like this may be scheduled in upcoming weeks. United Way of St. Johns asks those that may be interested in volunteering to contact lorie.shvets@unitedway-sjc.org. Volunteers MUST register in advance and be 18 or older. PPE will be provided and social distancing will be practiced.
