Several hundred gathered at the Mission Nombre de Dios on Saturday, Sept. 6 to celebrate the 449Â the anniversary of St. Augustine duringÂ a re-eactment of the landing ofÂ AdmiralÂ Don Pedro MenÃ©ndez de AvilÃ©s. The annual event was followed by Thanksgiving mass and a procession.
Chad Light portrayed Menendez, St. Augustine’s Royal Family was in attendance along with other dignitaries, including the The Knights of Columbus ofÂ the (Catholic) Diocese of St. Augustine. Mass was said by Bishop Estevez.
St. Augustine, Florida is the oldestÂ continuously occupied European city, port, and parish in the continental United States.
The anniversary commemoration began at 10Â a.m.Â Additional activities were offered throughout the dayÂ next door at Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park (www.fountainofyouthflorida.com).
