Several hundred gathered at the Mission Nombre de Dios on Saturday, Sept. 6 to celebrate the 449 the anniversary of St. Augustine during a re-eactment of the landing of Admiral Don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. The annual event was followed by Thanksgiving mass and a procession.

Chad Light portrayed Menendez, St. Augustine’s Royal Family was in attendance along with other dignitaries, including the The Knights of Columbus of the (Catholic) Diocese of St. Augustine. Mass was said by Bishop Estevez.

St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest continuously occupied European city, port, and parish in the continental United States.

The anniversary commemoration began at 10 a.m. Additional activities were offered throughout the day next door at Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park (www.fountainofyouthflorida.com).
