The EMMA Concert Association kicks off its 36th season with a gala concert featuring the world renowned Preservation Hall Jazz Band, direct from New Orleans. The concert will be heldat 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, in Lewis Auditorium at Flagler College, 14 Granada St., downton St. Augustine.
Tickets are $40 ($5 for students) and may be purchased in advance at www.emmaconcerts.com, by phone at 904-797-2800, or at the door. The box office opens one hour before the performance.

Preservation Hall was founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe in order to promote traditional and authentic New Orleans jazz, which had waned in popularity.

When the Jaffe’s transformed the venue at 726 St. Peter Street in the French Quarter, they made it a point to integrate and highlight musicians who had been active during the formative years of jazz. Legendary players such as George Lewis, Sweet Emma Barrett and Kid Thomas Valentine were among the Hall’s original stars. The Preservation Hall was one of very few venues in Jim Crow New Orleans to welcome performers of all races.

Allan Jaffe believed that the success of both the Hall and its mission of preservation required these bands to tour, so in 1963 he organized the newly minted Preservation Hall Jazz Band. That generation of musicians is now long gone, yet the hall remains in business — an internationally recognized cultural icon — and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band continues to tour the world over 150 days per year.

Current band members include the  Band’s creative director and original founders’ son, Ben Jaffe, sousaphone/bass; Mark Braud, trumpet/vocalist; Charlie Gabriel, clarinet/saxophone; Ronell Johnson, tuba; Joseph Lastie, Jr., drums; Freddie Lonzo, trombone; Clint Maedgen, saxophone; and Rickie Monie, piano.

Preservation Hall celebrated its Golden Anniversary in 2011, culminating in a sold out performance at Carnegie Hall.
