Relay For Life is a celebration of life in honor of those touched by cancer. The event also raises funds for the American Cancer Society’s programs of research, education, advocacy and service – programs that can reduce cancer deaths and cancer incidence, and improve the quality of life for those touched by cancer.
The official kickoff for the 2014-15 season is planned: Sunday, Oct. 12 when a Community Kickoff Celebration continues from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Treaty Park on Wildwood Drive, St. Augustine.
The Relay For Life program began in 1985 when Dr. Gordon Klatt, an oncologist in Tacoma Wash., wanted to make a difference in the lives of his cancer patients. Dr. Klatt’s idea was to run laps around a track for 24 hours and raise funds. He raised $27,000 and donated the money to the American Cancer Society. Since then, Relay For Life has grown to become the American Cancer Society’s national signature activity with more than 5400 events in 19 countries. In St. Augustine, more than 200 took to the St. Augustine High School track in May of 2014 , raising more than $50,000 to help the American Cancer Society battle this disease that has stolen too many precious moments from our loved ones.
Relay For Life is a true community event where people of all ages and from all walks of life come together for a common cause. We walk, jog or run relay style around the tracks or pathways at school or community football fields, fairgrounds and parks for 18 hours. Friends, relatives, local businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based organizations, service clubs and other organizations organize teams of 10-15 people. Each team member is asked to raise $100 before the event.
The 2015 Relay For Life of St. Augustine season is in full swing and event leader Laura Custead invites everyone to participate. Registration is free and can be done online at relayforlife.org/staugustinefl.
