View of the Flagler College towers from our room. Formerly the Hotel Ponce de Leon, this historic landmark was completed in 1888. The Ponce is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture and was one of the most exclusive resorts of its day — one of the first in the U.S. to be wired with electricity!

While staying at TRYP, we ventured over to Ripley’s Believe it or Not St. Augustine, a fun museum for all ages. The “oddities” on view are from Robert Ripley’s collections, with new items such as artwork made from jellybeans and toast, to ancient cat mummies, a space station exhibit, and interactive games and displays — there is something for everyone.

Opening in December 1950, Ripley’s St. Augustine has become the longest standing Odditorium at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Since it opened, Ripley’s St. Augustine has become a staple of the city. The building itself is a part of St. Augustine history. Originally built in 1887 by William G. Warden as a winter home, the unique architecture stood out among the other buildings in the city. Locals refer to the building as Castle Warden.

Its pointed arches, notched parapets, and exotic ornamentation eventually caught the eye of Robert Ripley, who became a frequent visitor when the castle became a hotel in 1941. The “castle” was purchased in 1941 by Norton Basin and remodeled as the Castle Warden Hotel. Baskin and his wife, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, author of the classic novel The Yearling, had an apartment on the top floor.
