Thousands of St. Augustine residents and visitors gathered on Sept. 8 at the Mission Nombre de Dios for Founder’s Day — a celebration of St. Augustine’s 450th anniversary — with the Menendez Landing at 9 a.m., followed by a procession down San Marco Avenue to the Cathedral Basilica for mass. Nearly 100 re-enactors participated in the landing, portraying when Spanish admiral Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles came to shore on Sept. 8, 1565. Catholic dignitaries, including a Cardinal, city and state officials, and other special guests attended, including a Spanish and British ambassador.
