The King and Queen of Spain, King Felipe IV and Queen Letizia, made two appearances in St. Augustine on Friday, Sept. 18 — at the Castillo de San Marcos around 11 a.m., and  at the Government House and in the Plaza de la Constitucion, between King Street and Cathedral Place, downtown St. Augustine.

For the arrival at the Castillo, a small crowd gathered to get a glimpse of the King and Queen as they were ushered into the fort for a private tour of the National Monument.

In the Plaza, a crowd of several hundred greeted the King and Queen with applause. King Felipe addressed the audience of residents and visitors, in English and in Spanish. After the address, the King and Queen walked across Saint George Street and promenaded through the crowd, shaking hands with the public, and greeting students from Cathedral Parish School who held red carnations and small Spanish flags.

The King and Queen will be in St. Augustine through Sept. 20, during the annual U.S.-Spanish Council.
