May 29-30: Lee Weaver’s original play features St. Augustine Lighthouse history

Piercing the Darkness by Lee Weaver on stage May 29-30

St. Augustine, FL —  Local playwright, actor and artist Lee Weaver will present “Piercing the Darkness,” a two-act play on Memorial Day Weekend. In this performance, Weaver portrays three Light Keepers at the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Show times are 7 p.m. Saturday, May 29; and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, May 30 at i tech Smart Phone Repair,1797 Old Moultrie Road, St. Augustine — a space where Weaver also displays his handcrafted lighted wall art.

Weaver’s original production portrays three characters at the lighthouse — Captain Bob, Captain Baxter and Tour Guide Dave. They take theatergoers up the spiraling 219 steps to the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse.

On their upward journey, the three lightkeepers share an incredible amount of history: Ponce, Menendez, coquina, the Castillo, pirate attacks, the Civil War, Minorcans, Fort Mose, the Civil Rights movement, the rifle shot that nearly destroyed the lighthouse lens, The Junior Service League that saved the light station and so much more.

“Piercing the Darkness” is a St. Augustine story with history, music and humor. Captain Bob tells us about Ponce and Pedro; selling water from the Fountain of Youth; pirates and piracy jokes; the discovery of coquina and the first lighthouse. He teaches all a song, “Come Up The Steps of The Lighthouse With Me.”

After intermission, Captain Baxter, USCG, elaborates on the Fresnel Lens, the deterioration of The Light Station, its rescue by The Junior Service League of St. Augustine and other historical tidbits.

Lastly, Volunteer Guide Dave wraps up this novel, humorous, historically correct, one-man show with more exciting stories about our magnificent National Landmark.

Tickets are $15 for the May 29-30 performances. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Please call 904-907-7986 to reserve seats.
