July 29-30: Moana Jr. on stage at Flagler College by young artists  with developmental disabilities

APEX Theatre Studio presents second-annual Penguin Project production

St. Augustine, FL — Apex Theatre Studio will present its second-annual Penguin Project production, Moana Jr., on Saturday, July 29 and Sunday, July 30 at 2 p.m. at Lewis Auditorium at Flagler College, 14 Granada St., downtown St. Augustine, Florida. Tickets are available at www.apextheatrejax.com/events

Disney’s Moana Jr. is a musical adaptation of the 2016 animated film, bringing the adventures of Moana and her village of Motunui to life onstage. This thrilling and heartwarming coming-of-age story follows the strong-willed Moana as she sets sail across the Pacific to save her village and discover the truth about her heritage. Moana and the legendary demigod Maui embark on an epic journey of self-discovery and camaraderie as both learn to harness the power that lies within. With empowering messages of bravery and selflessness, Moana Jr. brings out the hero within each of us.

Every year across the country, a group of young artists take to the stage to perform a modified version of a well-known musical. These productions are unique, however, because all of the roles are filled by young artists with developmental disabilities including Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disabilities, learning disabilities, visual impairment, hearing impairment, and other neurological disorders. They are joined on stage by a dedicated group of “peer mentors,” children the same age without disabilities who have volunteered to work side-by-side with them through four months of rehearsals and the final performance. By providing access to community theater, The Penguin Project demonstrates that the special challenges of a disability should not handicap a child’s ability to participate in life’s experiences.

“Last year’s inaugural project, Aladdin Jr, was a transformational event for everyone involved,” said Ian Mairs, Managing Director of Apex.

“The joy in the room was palpable from day one. This group of young artists, mentors, and their families formed a special bond.”

The show’s running time is 70 minutes. Tickets are $22 (general admission). For tickets and information, visit www.apextheatrejax.com/events
