From Broadway to St. Augustine High School, this musical comedy is winner of three Tony Awards

St. Augustine, FL — The St. Johns County Center for the Arts Theatre Department at St. Augustine High School will present the musical Urinetown, performed by more than 60 students. Jeff Dodd is director. See the cast list below the story.

In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity’s most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides that he’s had enough and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom!

Performances are 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 and Saturday, Oct. 15, and 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16 in the school auditorium, 3205 Varella Ave, St. Augustine. Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for general admission. Tickets can be purchased at the door prior to each performance.

Urinetown is a hilarious musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theatre itself! Hilariously funny and touchingly honest, Urinetown provides a fresh perspective on one of America’s greatest art forms.

The musical is the winner of three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards.

The musical  opened on Broadaway at Henry Miller’s Theatre, running from September 20, 2001 through January 18, 2004, after 25 previews and 965 performances. Urinetown debuted at the New York International Fringe Festival, and was produced Off-Broadway at the American Theatre for Actors, from May 6, 2001 to June 25, 2001.
