Jaclyn Backhaus’s play “Men on Boats” is a satirical and adventurous reimagining of the 1869 expedition led by John Wesley Powell to chart the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon. The play is known for its unique casting requirement: the roles of the all-male historical expedition are played by a diverse cast of women and non-binary performers, challenging traditional historical narratives and gender roles.

The Glass Menagerie by Apex Theatre Studio

October 2-9: Apex Theatre Studio is kicking off its twelfth season with Tennessee Williams’ classic, The Glass Menagerie, at their black box theatre from September 26th to October 9th. Recognized as an American classic, The Glass Menagerie revolutionized modern American theatre when it debuted in 1944.

Mortality & Mourning: Women in Black — Candlelight Tours at the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum

October 3-31: The Ximenez-Fatio House Museum, 20 Aviles Street, will host Mortality and Mourning: Women in Black candlelight tours. This special event runs October 3-21 at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings at his historic house. Enjoy a guided candlelight tour through the 227-year-old house. Through powerful stories, period customs, and historic mourning attire, this immersive tour casts new light on how women lived with loss in the 19th century. Fanfare! by First Coast Opera

October 10: The new season starts with Fanfare! – a newly-designed festive season launch event and fundraiser on Friday, October 10. Held in Celebration Hall at St. Anastasia Catholic Church, this one-night-only event will be hosted by General Director Curtis Tucker, highlight the season’s upcoming operas, and feature a multi-course catered dinner by Chef Norberto Jaramillo of La Cocina at the Cellar Upstairs. Cracker Day at the St. Johns County Fairgrounds

October 11: The St. Johns County Cattlemen’s Association will host the annual Cracker Day at the St. Johns County Fairgrounds featuring horse games and food, including barbecue, and a Farmers Market with local vendors. Cracker Day celebrates cracker horses and cracker cattle, which were brought to the area by the Spanish. “Cracker” also refers to a cowboy who uses a whip to round up cattle, which makes a cracking sound when used. Gates open at 6 a.m., and the event is from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Admission is $5 (cash only). Registration to compete in the horse games ranges from $5-$15. Voctave (a cappella): The Corner of Broadway and Main Street

October 11: Voctave is a dynamic 11-member a cappella group hailing from Central Florida, renowned for their intricate and captivating vocal arrangements. The group will be performing tunes from their latest album, “The Corner of Broadway and Main Street,” which features 14 musical pieces. Founded in the winter of 2015 by esteemed producer and arranger Jamey Ray, Voctave brings together a rich tapestry of musical backgrounds. Ancient City Kids Day

October 25: The 26th annual Ancient City Kids Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25 at Francis Field, 29 W. Castillo Drive, downtown St. Augustine. Coordinated by EPIC and brought to the community by a committee of children organizations, Ancient City Kids Day is a day of fun-filled activities for children and families. The event is FREE for the public, and will include over 40 youth service agencies offering carnival style games and activities, arts and crafts, contests for kids, and live entertainment all day. Information about community resources will be available for parents. There will  be free t-shirts/goody bags for kids while they last. The only cost to the public will be for food or drinks. October 24-26: The St. Benedict Blues Festival will take place on the grounds of Saint Benedict the Moor Catholic Church, 86 M L King Jr Ave., in the historic Lincolnville area of downtown St. Augustine. Hours are 4-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25 and 12 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26. Admission is $5 and includes parking. Food such as New Orlean’s gumbo, pulled pork, ribs, and desserts will be offered. Beverages include water, soda, and beer from Ancient City Brewing. Bring lawn chairs for seating. October 29: Local pirate group Krewe of the 13 will host this Halloween event from 6-10 p.m. October 29 at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park in St. Augustine. Trick-or-Treating on Saint George Street

October 25: Each Halloween, Ancient City Tours hosts an event for the whole family in historic downtown St. Augustine. This year, St. George Street Trick-or-Treating will be on Saturday, October 25 from 1-4 p.m.. With this free event, children can trick-or-treat at businesses in the north St. George Street area, which is a pedestrian mall. More than 300 shops, boutiques and bistros will participate in handing out candy for the event. Participating businesses will be marked with orange and black balloons in their entryway. This popular annual event is coordinated by Ancient City Tours.

Whiskey, Wine and Wildlife — Culinary Festival

November 7-9: Whiskey, Wine & Wildlife comes to Vilano Beach for a three-day event November 7-9. Great spirits and wine tastings are artfully combined with inspired cuisine from some of the South’s best chefs and local culinary superstars, with a chance to safely experience coastal wildlife up close. The weekend’s events will raise funds and awareness for Vilano Beach Main Street and the GTM Reserve’s research and education programs. Seinfeld producer Gary Gilbert seeks to recover stamps stolen from victims of the Holocaust by a rogue Nazi officer. This real-life mission is part detective story, part heist film, and a small but powerful act of historical reckoning.

Mimi Wahlmann, who was featured in the film, will give a Q&A after the screening.

Nights of Lights

November 15-January 11: The annual Nights of Lights opens on Saturday, Nov. 15 during Light-Up Night, an event that includes live music in the Plaza de la Constitucion, between King Street and Cathedral Place in downtown St. Augustine. Light-Up Night is Saturday, November 15 with music starting at 5:30 p.m., and the lighting ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. Each year, former St. Augustine mayors gather to flip the switch during Light Up Night. The City of St. Augustine’s giant tree in the Plaza de la Constitucion is lit first, then all the lights come on surrounding the area. Many families start the holiday season with this tradition — going to dinner downtown and and then watching as the lights are turned on. The Nutcracker Ballet

December 19-21: The Sugar Plum Fairy, Clara, the Mouse King, and all the favorite Nutcracker characters will return to the St. Augustine stage this holiday season. Free Family Scavenger Hunt at Peña-Peck House

Every Wednesday-Saturday: Bring the whole family for a fun and educational adventure at the historic Peña-Peck House, 143 St. George Street, in downtown St. Augustine. The Family Scavenger Hunt is specially designed for children ages 5–10 (and their grown-ups) to explore the 275-year-old house together! From a cannon ball to colonial toys, musical instruments to Polly the Parrot —each stop reveals a piece of the past in an interactive and age-appropriate way. Every child receives a small prize for completing the hunt, and parents love how history comes alive for their little explorers. The family Scavenger Hunt is available Wednesday-Saturday between 12-4:30, with the last tour beginning at 3:45 PM Admission is free. Donations are accepted and help with historic preservation.
