Daily Rituals: Menorcan Stories exhibit at the Ximenez-Fatio House
March 17-May 17: Daily Rituals: Menorcan Stories, a new exhibit, is on view at the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum, circa 1798, located on the oldest street in St. Augustine, Florida. Explore the rich cultural heritage and daily life of St. Augustine’s Menorcan community through the clothing, household items, and traditions that shaped their world. Focusing on 1768–1830 and centered on the life of Juana Pellicer and her family, this exhibit delves into the resilience and customs of the Menorcans while also examining broader aspects of life in the Second Spanish Period, including slavery, Menorcan weddings, and more. In 1798, Don Andres Ximenez built this fine three-story coquina home for his wife, Juana Pellicer, and their children.
Juana’s father, Francisco Pellicer, was a key figure in the Menorcan exodus of 1777, leading approximately 600 people out of bondage in New Smyrna and into St. Augustine, Florida. A master carpenter, Francisco Pellicer may have even contributed to the construction of this very house. This special exhibit highlights the enduring legacy of the Menorcan community and can be explored on both our docent-led guided tours and self-guided audio tours. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the everyday lives of the Menorcan people in historic St. Augustine.
