Daily Rituals: Menorcan Stories exhibition at the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum

Through May 17: at the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum, circa 1798 on the oldest street in St. Augustine, Florida! Audio or guided tours Mon-Sat between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Explore the rich cultural heritage and daily life of St. Augustine’s Menorcan community through the clothing, household items, and traditions that shaped their world. Focusing on 1768–1830 and centered on the life of Juana Pellicer and her family, this exhibit delves into the resilience and customs of the Menorcans while also examining broader aspects of life in the Second Spanish Period, including slavery, Menorcan weddings, and more. In 1798, Don Andres Ximenez built this fine three-story coquina home for his wife, Juana Pellicer, and their children. Juana’s father, Francisco Pellicer, was a key figure in the Menorcan exodus of 1777, leading approximately 600 people out of bondage in New Smyrna and into St. Augustine, Florida. A master carpenter, Francisco Pellicer may have even contributed to the construction of this very house. RSVP for a tour: https://www.ximenezfatiohouse.org/tours/

A portion of the proceeds of the April 5 matinee will benefit The Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society and will be followed by a short post show discussion of the play.

Directed by Deborah Dickey, My Friend Zelma presents the landmark trial of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings for Invasion of Privacy. Rawlings was a Pulitzer-winning author who lived in rural Cross Creek, Florida as well as having a home in Crescent Beach. She wrote novels and stories focusing on rural themes, including The Yearling and Cross Creek.

In her novel Cross Creek, Mrs. Rawlings mentions her good friend Zelma Cason. Cason did not like the description given of her and sued Mrs. Rawlings for Invasion of Privacy. Cason and Rawlings had been close until the publication of Cross Creek soured the friendship and led to a colorful courtroom battle. The trial drew nationwide attention and was a landmark case in the question of “right of privacy” in the state of Florida.

Rogers was revered by an entire generation of musicians, including the late Jimmy Buffet, who dedicated his album ‘Fruitcakes’ to the songwriter. His status as a local figure was memorialized after his tragic passing on October 10, 1991 when he drowned attempting to save a swimmer in distress off Flagler Beach. The stretch of shoreline was later renamed in his honor. Gamble Rogers received a Florida Folk Heritage Award posthumously in 1993 and was later inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 1998. Tickets and details at gamblerogersfest.org
