Tail section of WWII-era plane washes up on South Ponte Vedra Beach

The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum received the tail section of a World War II-era plane that washed up along South Ponte Vedra Beach during the recent nor’easter.  The initial findings suggest that the part came from a F4F Wildcat, an aircraft produced by the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation mostly based on aircraft carriers.    The section includes a tail hook suggesting it was carrier-based.

Sept. 5: Founder’s Day Procession at the Fountain of Youth marks St. Augustine’s 455th Anniversary

Historic Florida Militia, in cooperation with the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, will present a commemoration of the 455th anniversary of the founding of our city by Pedro Menendez de Aviles (on September 8, 1565) with a processional and celebration of the First Thanksgiving on Saturday, September 5, 2020.
